MEDIA THEORY, DVD AND COMPOSITING ASSIGNMENT 3: Major Project Final Blog

‘ALPINE’ by Louisa James (2305925)

Synopsis:

Opening for The Jezabels, Melbourne indie pop sextet ALPINE embark on one of the most talked about Australian tours of 2011. Seen through the eyes of co-lead vocalist Lou James, she offers a glimpse of ALPINE through their experiences of this tour; on the road as individuals, friends and performers.

The processes taken to create this sequence were taken in the following steps:

1. Original footage that I shot from the camera (SONY HD Handycam 12.0 megapixels) was imported into iMovie and then imported into Adobe Premiere. In Adobe Premiere, the footage was edited together into the 1 minute and 30 second sequence. I applied a fade in at the beginning and a fade out at the end. In a few scenes I increased the speed by 150%. All this was required in my pre production stage in order to begin postproduction within Adobe After Effects.

2. The song ‘Villages’ which is being used is owned by my band ALPINE and therefore can be used for this assignment without concern for copyright. ‘Villages’ was imported into Adobe Audition. I edited the song to fit the 1min and 30 sec time frame of footage. I added in a fade in and fade out at the beginning and end of the song. On a multi-track, I imported the voice over recordings of band members, which I had recorded on the program Garage band. I had exported the footage from Adobe Premiere into a Quicktime file, which I could then watch and refer back to when adjusting the levels in Adobe Audition.  I noted the exact time where I would need to adjust levels of fade in and fade-outs of the existing audio in the Quicktime file. In addition, I also worked out where the new voice-overs should be placed within the song and again adjusted the levels. The song was then exported as a mp3.

3. In Adobe After Effects I created folders so that each aspect was organized appropriately. Folders names included ‘music’, ‘map animation’, ‘footage’ and ‘title animation’ and ‘titles’. I then imported the Quicktime file. I wanted to apply different effects to different sections of the footage. In order to do this I split the footage using the Ctl Shift D shortcut. To keep an overall feel throughout the sequence I applied the same effects to each scene, however, I had to alter each due to the different lighting and colour grading that existed on the original Quicktime footage. The affects I applied throughout included: Brightness and Contrast (to look clean and modern), a Magenta photo filter (to follow in the colour theme found on ALPINE’s EP) and a Hue and Saturation (to give a softer look).

4. Alpine already has it’s own font so it was copied within Illustrator and imported into Adobe After Effects. I used the font ‘ALPINE’ over the first viewable footage. I felt this to be impacting as the band name is also the title of the trailer documentary.  It was effective in drawing the viewer into the world of the trailer. I used the same font at the end of the trailer in order to create a sense of conclusion to the trailer.

5. I created an animation by importing an image of the Australian map which I had cropped and edited in Adobe Photoshop. The result was the east coast of Australia. I reduced the saturation of the original colour and filtered it with a pink colour in order to keep with the rest of the theme of the sequence that I had already created in Adobe After Effects. Within After Effects I decreased the opacity as the quality of the original image wasn’t great.  I then created a circle and imported it into Adobe After Effects and I decreased the opacity. The circle was animated in order to travel around the map to the cities that ALPINE went to on their tour.

6. I used text quite a few times in this sequence. I used text to write a short introductory blurb: ‘Opening for The Jezabels’ sold out National tour, Melbourne Indie pop sextet ALPINE embarked on one of the most talked about tours of 2011…’. I also used text in the animation scene. When the van went to a different location on the map, names of different cities would flash up on the same place on the screen. I again used text when I wrote a faux review in the middle of the trailer: ‘A playful and exciting journey into one of Australia’s newest emerging indie acts – Rolling Stone Magazine’. Text also appeared at the end when I wrote the credits ‘coming soon…’ as well as to credit my name ‘louisa james – 2305925’. 

7. To create the production title ‘Louisa James Productions’ I had to get some help from an online tutorial. To create it, the first step was to create a text layer. I then applied a shutter effect to a colour matte and then altered the settings to use a text layer as a custom mask.

How does the finished product compare to the original idea presented at the week 6 Pitch session?

As trailers are a series of selected shots from the film being advertised, my motive was to attract audiences to the documentary titled ‘ALPINE’. The excerpts I chose to use were of most exciting, funny, and potentially noteworthy parts of scenes, however, without giving too much away. Therefore the scenes are not in the order in which they appear in the apparent finished product of the documentary, and are more so a montage of the main themes.

I felt my initial idea that was pitched to the class in week 6 although not exactly what I had proposed was pretty close (80%) when considering my skills which are not yet at the intermediate level. I am satisfied with the outcome of my sequence.

What was included:

  • Fictional production name – Production Name which is slightly animated. Important as it shows who is distributing the documentary and reinforces the trailer’s legitimacy.
  • Narrative text – Introductory blurb about documentary, faux review and credits
  • Colour grading – Photo filter – Magenta
  • Speed –  Near the end, areas sped up to create intensity
  • Audio: Music/voice overs – ‘Villages’ by ALPINE as soundtrack to trailer and voice overs of band members to create intrigue into documetary
  • Important Imagery – Central to the story/Interpret meaning of each successive image – Day 1/Travelling (car or plane)/Soundchecking/Performances/Having fun/Backstage/Other band Hey Rosetta/ The Jezabels Performing.
  • Different shots of different locations – To portray the distance travelled which is also evident through the Animation
  • Titles – To include the title of the documentary.
  • Enlighten viewers – the oft-overlooked elements of a young band’s life – This is personalised and ALPINE’s own experience therefore unique to any other young band’s experiences.

What wasn’t included:

  • Interviews w label, fans around performances and behind the scenes to offer conflict and insight into personalities: The content I received from my interviews with the band members related to the trailer than the interviews I had with fans and or label personalities. I hadn’t included them in the trailer and therefore I felt they would be out of context.
  • Narrative focussing around The Forum theatre show: I wasn’t able to capture enough footage in Melbourne to enable the trailer to focus around ALPINE playing in their home town show at the end of the tour.
  • Car removed in map animation: I felt the photo image of the car didn’t look aesthetically pleasing and looked out of place. I therefore replaced this with a circle.
  • Evidence of time frame: I didn’t make any reference to how long the tour was, however focused more on the different cities travelled to on the tour. I felt the destinations related more to the angle of my trailer’s sequence.
  • Multiple footage: I didn’t do a montage of different footage in the one scene as I ran out of time and felt I already had very short scenes that doing this montage would make the trailer feel too overwhelming and confusing.
  • Voice over or Initial sound effects at the beginning (The angle/mood) – I didn’t include sound effects of voice overs at the very beginning. However, instead included a scene of Phil, the drummer on Day 1 say “We’re off to play with The Jezabels.” I felt this was very effective.

This is the last blog I write before writing my reflection piece to go with my major assignment.

This week I’ve begun putting together the footage in Adobe Premiere, ensuring it sits at the 1 min 30 mark. I still need to record each band member discussing their thoughts about the tour. I will get reflective thoughts as well as opinions on what’s been the highlights and lowlights of the tour. I’m also interested in seeing how the tour has benefited the band in anyway. The two images below are screen shots of the my editing work in Adobe Premiere. The first image is the first half and the second image is the second half.

 

 

 

 

 

I’ve left around ten seconds near the beginning of the footage where i’ll be using two different animated elements. These elements are…

1.  Photoshop document: Within the document, each image has it’s own layer. When I import this file into Adobe After Effects, I want to animate each layer (image) so that in quick succession, each image will fly onto the screen from 0% opacity to 100%. All the images one by one will fit together in order to look as it does in the image below, however the images will be against a white background. I like the idea of black and white as the rest of the footage will be graded in colourful, softer tones. The use of black and white only in this instance, will quickly make a bold introductory statement. I feel this is effective as it quickly pin points which individuals the viewer is to focus on. The use of the band name three times will reinforce who the trailer is about and the design layout is modern to appeal to the target demographic. This will be accompanied by a voice over from me to introduce the trailer, with a quote about the band or a personal opinion.

2. Animated Australian East Coast Map: This will be very simple. I will be using three jpeg images (Imax tour van, plane and map of east coast australia). The map will be graded into a soft pink and the van and plane will remain white in order to stand out. The route will be black to also stand out.

My voice over will continue over from the photoshopped animation in order to describe where the tour will be heading and this animation will be beneficial to give viewers a visual understanding of the exact locations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

HET324 Media Theory DVD and Compositing – Week 11

Appologies for this post being a day late due. This was due to distractions with a show at The Forum and a big night that followed.

This week I’ve been uploading all my footage into Adobe Premiere and i’ve begun highlighting which sections of each scene i’ll be using for the trailer. At this stage I am yet to figure out how I am going to piece together the trailer as I still need elements such as voice overs to create the narrative, live performance footage and more soundcheck and footage of the band preparing before a show. I am going to film our set tonight at The Forum, an iconic venue in Melbourne.

 I believe this to be a pivitol scene to be attributed to the trailer considering the band Alpine is from Melbourne. To get the viewer caught up in the “journey” element of the trailer and have nowhere to go appears pointless. Yesterday, I realized need to change the concept of the trailer and use the build up to playing at The Forum Theatre on the tour as a stronger way to keep the viewer interested as there is more a means to an end. I feel this will help to also heighten the suspense and allure the viewer to join the band on their “journey” whilst on the tour in the lead up to their home town show in Melbourne.

I am still struggling to find the time to really tackle this assigment, however I am aiming to have all the footage I need by the end of this week. This should allow me to begin putting the footage I have together to create a basic idea to show for next Friday’s class. At this stage I am not very confident that I will have the after effects element applied to footage except for colour grading and maybe some titles. When putting the footage together, although it needs to be within the time frame of a minute and a half, I will need to also consider the time allowance for the animation and the photo montage. I have lots of footgae so cutting this down to a minute and a half is going to be really difficult, hopefully it will force me to

I am really excited to begin putting this trailer together. Considering the material has a personal tie to me, the trailer is something that I am keen to upload onto the band’s social networking sites for fans. It appears that visual elements that are uploaded onto social networking sites have a stronger impact becuase they offer more of an insight into the band than just text.  I am interested in also making the documentary to go with the trailer later in the year so to follow up on the trailer that is posted on the band’s social networking sites.

ALPINE DOCUMENTARY TRAILER

Synopsis:

Opening for The Jezabels, Melbourne indie pop sextet ALPINE embark on one of the most talked about Australian tours of 2011. Seen through the eyes of co-lead vocalist Lou James, she offers a glimpse of ALPINE through their current experiences of this tour on the road as individuals, friends and performers.

Treatment: 

  • Aim: To entice my audience into wanting to view the entire documentary (despite it having yet to be made). Overall, the trailer needs to ignite the audiences curiosity. The audience should want to know what the rest of documentary is about, why ALPINE are a band of interest, and why certain scenes have occurred in the teaser trailer.
  • Planning: In my planning stages I decided to create rough ‘block’ ideas for each section of the trailer. For example: 1) Arriving at rehearsal space. Morning. First day. 2) Loading gear into cab. 3) Driving to airport. 4) In aeroplane. 5) Loading gear into tour van. 6) Travelling to different destinations. On the road. 7) Setting up gear in different venues/soundchecks/vocal warm ups 8) Performances 9) Spontaneous fun 10) Meeting/getting to know other bands and crew on the tour. 11) Press/photoshoots. 12) Backstage 13) Any problems?
  • Camera Angles: I cannot plan what camera angles I will to use for this trailer. This is because the majority of the footage will be ‘in the spur of the moment’ footage. In addition, to enhance the realism, I will not be using a tripod. I like the idea of the trailer looking low fi because I believe it is the reminder that I play a part in the band and the documentary also. It will capture the realism of the trailer.
  • Special Effects: I intend to entertain audiences with a fast paced approach when editing this trailer together in order to evoke a fun, bright, dreamy youthful feel. This will be achieved by short edits of scenes and even a percentage increase to some footage. I will also be cutting up many of the scenes into multiple squares within the one scene. I hope that this effect will create a dramatic surge of energy at the end of the trailer.
         I will also use colour grading. The colours I will use are the colours used on our EP and social networking sites. They will be used as colour filters over the       footage. I hope that they will tie the trailer together and allow the trailer to stand out with it’s own flavour to other existing trailers.

  • Animation: A very short animation will be used to demonstrate where the tour will be taking place in Australia. To achieve this I will use to layers. The first layer will be a JPEG of the the east coast of Australia, including Tasmania. The second layer will be a cropped image of a tour van. The animation will show the van travelling to different cities.
  • Performers: All performances in the trailer will be naturalistic/realistic performances. Therefore no actors are being used. The people filmed will be those in the bands and myself. I will also be interviewing them in order to collect dialogue as narration layered over the top of the footage.
  • Lighting: The lighting used in the documentary trailer will be the natural light from the public places that are already established. The only use of artificial light will be the light used from the live performance shots. To create a modern feel, I will modify the brightness/contrast/curves/hue/saturation in order to give the footage more impact with a higher definition finished look.
  • Music: The music used will be ALPINE’s music. As I am in ALPINE this means that there will be no copyright infringement. I may also use remixes of some of our songs, however the choice of which songs I will use will not be decided until post production has been completed.
  • Rating: The M rating is recommended for people with a mature perspective but is not deemed too strong for younger viewers. Language is moderate in impact, allowing the use of words such as ‘fuck,’ but “aggressive or strong coarse language” should be infrequent. This is the highest unrestricted rating.

In this weeks lecture we looked at music videos. Being in a band myself, we already have two music videos that are on YouTube and have been played on Tv. I found the lecture really interesting because as a child, I grew up watching programs like Rage and Video Hits. I have always been drawn to the visual aspects of music because I loved to compare my interpretation of a song to a music directors. A song can never have one interpretation so I believe music videos are s great way of demonstrating this. When we’ve had directors pitch for videos for my band Alpine, it’s really important that the video is visually and creatively unique. This reflects that we are open to a director having a completely different interpretation and will hopefully mean that the outcome of the music video immediately draws the viewer into the world of the song from the beginning right until the end.

I also learnt that when the first music video station MTV was started, the very first music video to be played was ‘video killed the radio star’ by the Buggles. It was thought of being ironic as the first song played on MTV. It was the end of an decade of just listening to a song on the radio and the beginning of a new decade i the 80s where people could also appreciate the visual element of a song.

No longer are music videos just a means of visually developing on a musicians live performance like they did for bands such as Pink Floyd in the early days. To date music videos are a visual art form contained within a very short time frame ranging between 3 – 4 minutes.  To come up with a strong concept within such a short time frame is very hard to do, therefore there are now awards to recognize and credit this art form. There are some videos that are highly acclaimed. In the lecture we looked at a few music videos and specific famous directors including English director Chris Cunningham who directed videos for Aphex Twin ‘Come to Daddy’ and Bjork. Cunningham is famously recognized for his technique of realistically super imposing faces onto other people to usually provoke an element of fear and or to create videos that would ordinarily exist only in our dream state.
We also looked at French director Michel Gondry who directed videos for The Chemical Bothers ‘Star Guitar’ and Kylie Minogue ‘come into my world’. Gondry is famous for his cloning, masking technique within the one scene and cleverly using the repetition of images to correlate with the music.
For my major assignment, I have already begun filming the first leg of the tour with my band. Although, I have been filming extensive footage I have yet to get the ‘drama’ element, which I’m hoping to include. So far i’ve shot footage from the first day, to us driving to the airport, being on the road, soundchecks, performances and our days off. To date this is the 6th day of the tour and still have 4 more days to shoot until I begin editing the footage into Adobe Premiere. In the next four days I’m going to interview each individual member in order to get some voice overs to use as content and narration. I also want to film the other bands who are also playing on this tour including Hey Rosetta and The Jezabels. I’d like to get insight into them as people and as performers. If I can i’d also like to get some interviews with fans at the shows. The most annoying part is occasionally missing a ‘drama’ element because I haven’t been filming 24/7 whilst on this tour. I therefore feel that my trailer for this documentary may be a little different to my initial idea proposed in the pitch.

I’m really looking forward to the final Major assignment for this subject; not only because it is my last assignment but because i’m combining my bands up and coming tour experiences with The Jezabels to create a 1 min and 30 sec trailer for a fake documentary.

 

Alpine were signed in 2009, therefore as a young band i’m hoping that the trailer will look at the often over looked elements for a band starting out including how the experiences effects the members as individuals, friends and performers. I looked at three trailers for inspiration and to find the commonalities found in trailers in order to base mine around when it came to applying after effects.

Live Forever: Rise and Fall of Brit Pop

The first step for my major assignment is to collect old Alpine footage and put it into it’s own folder. Last night I imported a lot of footage that I had shot in February for my bands EP launch tour. Having this footage will be important as it will allow me to have a “then and now” element to the trailer.  Tomorrow i’m collecting other footage that the other band members have also shot.

The second step is to begin filming new footage on tour which will begin this Saturday. During my time touring with Alpine i’m aiming to film and edit the footage together in Adobe Premiere. Realistically i’ll need to scale all the footage down to 5 minutes in order to give me flexibility in what will be the best footage to use and in what order it needs to appear within a 1 min and 30 seconds trailer.

The third step is to import the footage in Adobe After Effects. This is where i’ll be adjusting the colour grading to the footage (hue/saturation/curves/contrast/brightness) and where i’ll be creating the short animation. Within Adobe Illustrator i’ll be creating the Production Name frame and then importing the file into Adobe After Effects.

Assignment 1: Piano Love Reflection Piece

Piano Love is a short 24 second silent movie inspired by own my experiences. Although this assignment didn’t require a narrative, I found myself creating one anyway.  The concept for the short film came almost immediately to me after someone who I cared a lot about had left for travelling adventures around Australia and I felt a little lost. At the same time, I was trying to write some music for my band but couldn’t because I was sad and uninspired. I experienced writer’s block and became so frustrated that despite my enjoyment of writing music, it just wasn’t the same if I wasn’t in the right state of mind.

Coincidentally, whilst I was coming up with this concept I was listening to Coldplay (a band I haven’t listened to in ages). As I was listening to the album, the song, The Hardest Part started playing. For the first time I really listened to the lyrics, “…I tried to sing but I couldn’t think of anything and that was the hardest part.” As corny as that sounds, it really summed up how I felt at the time and attributed to the creation of the narrative for Piano Love. I didn’t mind that this idea was going to be corny, as most Silent Films often over exaggerate emotions. I therefore used this to my advantage.

Piano Love is about a young girl who is struggling to find the joy in playing the piano. This is because she is lonely and fed up. To her surprise, a young man appears. She isn’t lonely anymore. He suggests that they play a song together. In awe of him, the young girl is happy again and finds the motivation to play the piano with the young man. They are happy and in love. Together they share the love of  playing the piano.

I am really happy with the final outcome of my silent film because it reflected exactly what I had in mind and what was in the storyboard. I believe this was because I didn’t rush into anything and I had really planned out how I was going to execute the silent film. To begin with, I did a lot of thorough research into silent films, by looking at 10 different styles of silent films. I wrote down commonalities of the silent film style for me to incorporate into my own. Before I started filming I had the time frame constantly in mind. I had decided on the location/setting, the actors, the costumes, the camera angles, the lighting and what effects in after effects I would need to apply. The hardest part was fine tuning and tweaking my rough edit in After Effects to most replicate a silent film. The effects I used included: Contrast/Brightness, Speed, Curves, Hue/Saturation, Music, Importing a JPEG file (love heart) in which I added Wriggler effect and opacity, Importing three Illustrator files (The three text/boarder frames) and Importing the Silent Film effect layer over the original footage.

HET324 Media Theory DVD and Compositing – Week 05

In this weeks tutorial, we played around with Special Effects. We did two exercises where masks where used in After Effects. The first exercise involved an individual appearing in the same scene three times. This was achieved by filming four shots with the camera perfectly still and layering each the four shots onto one another. The first shot was filmed without anyone in it and the three others were filmed with an individual appearing in different locations and movements to one another.

The second exercise involved two people reinacting a scene from star wars by using bamboo sticks as light sabers. In After Effects, one of the bamboo stick was masked by using the pen tool to trace around the bamboo stick. This was altered for every frame, so to follow the movement of the bamboo stick in the footage. I found this exercise a little more complicated than the first, and I fee that l i’d need to go through this again if i were to apply this effect to my major assignment.

For assignment 1 I had used my friend’s version of Final Cut Pro to edit my footage. The reason for wanting to use Final Cut Pro was because I had recently put a short film together and so I was very familiar with the program and I hadn’t used Adobe Premiere since 2008. So, by week 4, although my footage was ready to be imported into After effects I realised I was encountering a few problems by not choosing to use Adobe Premiere in the first place.

The first being, that it is a lot easier to transfer Premiere files into After Effects rather than Final Cut into After Effects. The second being that I didn’t have the right version of Final Cut Pro for myself in order to transfer the files onto After Effects in my own time. The third being that this was all incredibly time consuming.

This week, however, I finally found a version of Adobe Premiere. So i’m back on track. Yesterday I imported all the original footage (unedited) into Premiere and edited it together in the same way as I had within Final Cut. I increased the speed by 150% and included the three text frames that i had created in Adobe Illustrator. I then exported the file as a Quickmovie into Adobe After Effects. At this stage I have begun adding effects to the footage in After Effects.

I’ve already begun brain storming an idea for my major assignment. At this stage I think I will be making a 1 minute trailer for a documentary about my band whilst we’re away touring for a large part of October.

In this weeks lecture we looked at Special Effects (SFX). I learnt that when using special effects, it needs to be integrated into the storytelling. Before applying special effects, it needs to be considered that the special effect has a role/function, how it visually communicates to the audience and what the aesthetic value/meaning may be.

This weeks tutorial was beneficial as this was the first time we were able to film footage and learn about applying different effects to adjustment layers such as curves, levels, masking, contrast/brightness, hue/saturation and the silent film look.

On Wednesday the 31st of October I filmed the footage for my first assignment. The location was at a friend’s house in Fitzroy. It was the perfect location for my silent film to suit the era. This was due to the neutral colour scheme of the interior of the house (white brick walls and white high ceilings) decorated with antiques such as paintings, old books, ornaments and the grand piano (as my story was focused around the grand piano, it was imperative that I found a location that had one).

Location

Before shooting, I spent an hour preparing the the area around the grand piano. This included removing anything that may remove the forth wall and rearranging the furniture. The two people who were to be in silent film were to wear costumes and apply make-up that resembled the 1930s (the boy had dark eye make-up where as the girl had dark eye make-up, rosy cheeks and red lips). This was done so their features would stand out after i applied effects in after effects.

Characters

In preparation for filming, I had organised a SONY HD 12 megapixel handycam and a tripod. I didn’t need any props apart from a candle that was required to rest above the grand piano. The candle was important because I wanted to have low light in the room in order to evoke a feeling of romance and lonesomeness. I was hoping for the candle light to symbolise hope for the eventual happy ending of the silent film. Luckily, the house had adjustable lights, which allowed me to get the perfect amount of low light needed to create the ambience that would be captured by the camera.

Today, I have begun the first step of editing in Final Cut Pro. At this stage I have cut the footage down to 23 seconds and it is in the chronological order to my storyboard. I had to slightly speed up the footage in Final cut to not only resemble a silent film, but also so that the assignment was within 15-30 seconds. At this stage, I am almost ready to begin importing the footage into After Effects. However, I need to use a program that will allow me to import Final Cut into Adobe After Effects and i’m not 100% sure on how to do this.

Other things I want to consider:

  • Heart animation for final scene (Illustrator image into wriggler effect)
  • Scratchy look (Real_8mm_Film.mov)
  • Sepia and or black and white (hue/saturation)
  • Highlights and low lights (Contrast/Brightness)
  • To find out the right dimensions for the text frame in order to import it into Final Cut Pro
  • Narrative music

HET324 Media Theory DVD and Compositing – Week 03

In the third lecture, we discussed motion graphics (title and effect sequences). When I begin editing my silent film, it’s important that I choose a title for it’s aesthetic (how it looks) and it’s narrative (how it conveys a message) quality in relation to my footage’s genre, setting, mise en scene, story, characters, composition, target audience and tone.

I’ve begun developing my 15-30 second silent film idea for the first assignment. I’m aiming to film the footage next week in order to have a week and a bit to edit and add in effects within After Effects.  I’m confident with my ideas and my ability to film the footage for this assignment, however i’m not that confident with my ability to create and add the effects. Therefore it’s important for me to film the footage as soon as possible so I can focus my attention to after effects.
